1907-1997Nacido en Viena, estudia leyes, pero entusiasmado por las peliculas de Sergei M. Eisenstein y de Erich Von Stroheim decide trasladarse a Paris a aprender la nueva tecnologia. Trabaja en Berlin como ayudante de camara, pero de nuevo, con la llegada del sonoro, siente la necesidad de aprender esa nueva tecnica por lo que se traslada a los Estados Unidos, donde traba conocimiento con Robert Flaherty. En calidad de ayudante de Flaherty vuelve a Europa con la intencion de rodar un documental sobre Asia central. De nuevo en Norteamerica, dirige una serie de cortos para Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, por uno de los cuales logra un Oscar en 1938. Su primer exito como director de largometrajes lo obtiene con The Seventh Cross (1944).
